What is Baking and Pastry Arts?

Baking and pastry arts is one of the programs or courses usually offered by culinary institutes to students who wish to focus on baking and pastry making. Those who wish to become pastry chefs or who wish to concentrate on creating cakes, desserts and sweets as a chef would do well to choose this program in a culinary school.

Not that many people know that baking and creating wonderful pastries and desserts actually requires a lot of discipline and creativity at the same time. Most chefs know that creating desserts and baking is an art that can make or break a chef. Desserts can be very tricky and if a person cannot apply himself to the art or lacks the drive to succeed as a pastry chef, then baking and pastry arts is not the culinary degree for him to pursue.

You can study to become a pastry chef at a number of reputable chef colleges in North America. While some of these schools use different course names for their baking and pastry arts degree, these basically offer students similar lessons to help them become pastry chefs. For example, if you choose to obtain a culinary degree in baking and pastry arts in Le Cordon Bleu, you will need to enroll in their Patisserie and Baking course. The Culinary Academy of Austin offers students a degree in Pastry arts. The California Institute of Technology however offers students courses in Baking and Pastry arts and another that gives a student a diploma that makes him a Baking and Pastry Specialist.

With a course in baking and pastry arts, you will learn baking and pastry techniques, baking equipment technology, principles of design, food math, classical and basic cake making and a whole lot more. You will also learn confectionary and chocolate making techniques, specialty breads and even how to manage your own pastry business.

These culinary degrees usually take around 38 months to complete in such culinary institutes like the Culinary Institute of America and the French Culinary Institute. Students who wish to enroll in a baking and pastry course also need to qualify for admissions before they can start training to become a future pastry chef.
